After you enjoy your time with nature, you will be deposited on a bank adjoining some paddy fields.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese seasonal paddy cultivations, also called ‘Chena’ cultivations, are dependent on the two major monsoon rain periods that take the place of winter in Sri Lanka. The walk through the fields will allow you to see the paddy cultivation first-hand. This quick tour will last 15 minutes and your guide will update you with more information about the local methods of rice cultivation. You will then move back to the village and be introduced to a local, who will give you a half-hour cooking demonstration on traditional Sri Lankan cooking. The open gem pits are about 8 – 10 feet deep with reinforced sides. There are motors fixed on sides as standby devices to pump out excess water that seeps from the bottom of the pit. When the section with the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/gems\"\u003egems\u003c\/a\u003e is visible, the muddy water from the pit is diverted into a smaller knee-deep pit for washing and sifting the gem stones from the gravel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGuests are also offered the option of experiencing the life of a gem miner where you can get your hands and legs muddy. You may have to get into waist or knee-deep water and sift through the sediment the same way the workers demonstrate.
