The pass along with the fortress which provides a good lookout point, was able to keep both the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/portuguese-period\"\u003ePortuguese\u003c\/a\u003e and Dutch at bay, and with a few clever tactics the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/kings\"\u003eKandyan Kings\u003c\/a\u003e were able to keep their kingdom free. However at the beginning of the 19th century the British launched simultaneous invasions on all routes into \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/kandy\"\u003eKandy\u003c\/a\u003e and captured it. Balana pass, which was the narrowest and most protected, was the last to fall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou will be able to visit and see the crumbling battlements of the Balana fortress.
